Your online product or service should be based on two simple principles. There must be a demand and it must be something people need.

People have all sorts of problems and are continually looking for solutions to those problems. They are looking for something to make their lives better, to make them feel better, to make them look better. Add to that the amount of free time many people have to spend on hobbies etc., and then if you can solve those problems for them, and continue to provide useful information, you are on your way to finding your niche market.

One of the main things you must do before deciding is of course research. You must determine the demand for your product. If you can do that and determine that those people are prepared to spend money, then you have a niche marketing product with which you can make money on the internet.

As you are doing your research, you must also try to find out what people can reasonably expect to pay for your product or service. By visiting sites similar to yours, find out what products are advertised and at what price. You should be able to tell from those prices what price range you should be aiming at.

What many people consider to be problems can vary widely. Some, extremely simple and some complex, but if you are there to solve those problems, the price people will pay can be quite surprising. A good way to find out what people consider a problem is to visit the online forums. On these forums you will find all manner of questions and problems. It is a good idea to become a member of forums and to take part in the discussions. Answer some of the problems, and include a link back to your site where people can find more useful information.

Write your own articles on your topic, or have them written for you. In this way you will soon build up a content rich website, which will answer problems and provide much more useful information for your followers.

Remember, with niche marketing, you are not trying to sell to everyone. You are only a small business person and consequently, you do not have the large advertising budget of the big companies, you could not possibly compete. That is what niche marketing is. Niche marketing is not about focusing on the big picture.

It is about focusing on the small picture and the smaller the better. Narrowing your niche down to a very specific part of a larger market assures you of gaining a fair market share of that small part.

The world is a big place and there are billions of people. You only need an infinitesimal portion of the population to have a huge list of potential buyers of your products or services. With niche marketing you are really not trying to compete, you have a small niche so you are not trying to sell the same thing as a million other people. You are selling to a specific audience that you have created for yourself with your opt-in email list. It is not necessarily about selling to different people all of the time. Once you have your list built, you can sell to the same people time and time again. By taking as much time as you need and putting forth enough effort to get to know the people who make up your list of buyers you can continue to sell to them.

You are appealing to a small, specialized market, and with just a computer, an internet connection, and a good idea, you can appeal to a much smaller audience and build a very successful business in your own right. With niche marketing you are not looking to achieve the impossible (competing with the big boys). You are only looking at what is possible (small, specialized market).

Small possibilities if converted into sales can mean very big profits indeed.
